THE CELLAR AND POINT is an adventurous, NYC-based "garage-chamber" septet formed in 2010 by drummer/composer Joseph Branciforte and guitarist/composer Christopher Botta. The group’s musical universe comprises the detail of modern concert music, the improvisational sensibilities of downtown jazz, and the emotional directness of alt-rock, featuring a cross-section of young talent from NYC's classical, jazz, and new music scenes -- including members of JACK Quartet, Mantra Percussion, Mivos Quartet, and Signal Ensemble. The group’s songbook includes original compositions by Branciforte and Botta as well as idiosyncratic arrangements of 20th century composers such as Anton Webern, György Ligeti, and Piere Boulez.

The band's debut recording, Ambit, was released on Cuneiform Records in late 2014. The album was included in New Sounds host John Schaefer's Top 10 Records of 2014 and was called "one of 2014's finest albums of challenging, engaging, and genre-defying contemporary music” by AllMusic. The album has also received praise from BBC Radio, Wondering Sound, Q2 Music, and All About Jazz, who called the group "one of the most interesting bands of the moment, perhaps able to answer the question: 'where is music going?'"

Since 2010, THE CELLAR AND POINT has consistently polished its live performance in New York City, performing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Winter Jazz Fest, and WNYC’s New Sounds Live along the way. They have shared the stage artists such as Kneebody, Eric Harland’s Voyager, Ben Monder, Florent Ghys, The Knells, Empyrean Atlas, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, and David T. Little's Newspeak. Time Out NY's Steve Smith has lauded the ensemble's live performance as “brainy, yet highly engaging.”

“The new music band/pop group/undefinable collective contains some of the finest musicians around. Their debut CD is a mix of catchy, over- whelming, bewildering, and unadulterated awesome.”
